Why is it that we so often associate relaxation with guilt? When we take a look at the words they truly have nothing to do with each other. Oxford definition of relaxation is “the state of being free from tension and anxiety”, and the definition of guilt is: “the fact of having committed a specified or implied offense or crime”. Is our brain equating the act of relaxation to committing a crime? Seems a bit extreme.
I think that the biggest issue when it comes to relaxation is that we look at it as the antithesis of productivity, and therefore synonymous with laziness. Hear me out, relaxation and laziness are not the same! Relaxation is essential to a healthy mind and body. We all know the terrible effects stress has on our health, so why then do we not think of relaxation like exercising? As an important way to take care of ourselves?
I am a person who has trouble sitting still, I often fall into the trap of relaxation equals laziness, so I have come up with a few tricks to avoid this trap. Schedule relaxation, I know this sounds a little counterintuitive, but trust me it works. Unsure how to relax? Force the matter by booking a massage or a facial. Pick up a good book. At the end of the day, do what you need to do to prioritize relaxation, and take notice of the effects it has on your health.
